Detoxification with Spirulina – Radioactive Contamination

Since I was introduced to Spirulina in the eighties’, a great deal of research has been conducted about Spirulina’s effectiveness in mitigating the effects of radiation.
I lived in Austria during the terrible nuclear disaster of Chernobyl in 1986, and witnessed how difficult it was for our minds to comprehend the short and long-term effects the disaster might have on Europe — (i will blog about it later) Therefore, it seems quite clear that the nuclear problems in Fukushima have raised the question to find natural remedies, which would mitigate long-term effects on radiation, which could compromise life in this country, too.

According to a scientific review of Spirulina’s benefits in the Journal of Applied Phycology:

“… Many pre-clinical studies and a few clinical studies suggest several therapeutic effects ranging from reduction of cholesterol and cancer to enhancing the immune system, increasing intestinal lactobacilli, reducing nephrotoxicity by heavy metals and drugs and radiation protection. This paper presents a critical review of some published and unpublished data on therapeutic effects of Spirulina.”

Back to our subject — Spirulina was actually used to treat children exposed to chronic low-levels of radiation after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster:
When the Chernobyl reactor melted down, an official number of 134 plant workers and firefighters were exposed to high doses of radiation—800 to 16,000 mSv—and developed acute radiation sickness and 31 died within the first 3 months (more workers followed during the unofficial cleanup, numbers climbed up to 6000, though the numbers were disputed).

In total, more than 150,000 cleanup workers became victims of radiation poisoning. Life was compromised due to the radiotoxic environment on a high level for all people, including children (160,000), adults and animals.  Many people suffered of leukemia, anemia, cancers, thyroid disease, liver and bone marrow degeneration, and overall severely compromised immune systems.

Clean up

A British company reportedly sent shipments of Spirulina to clinics in Belarus to treat child victims of radiation sickness. Soviet physicians at the Institute of Radiation Medicine in Minsk administered 5 grams of Spirulina daily to some of the radiation-exposed children for 45 consecutive days. The improvements were outstanding:

  • The spirulina-fed children showed bone marrow, spinal fluid, blood cell and liver regeneration. The low white blood cell tripled within 20 days. Urine radioactivity levels decreased by 50 percent.

Health restoration was reported even when radiation sickness was advanced, and despite to the fact that the food and water as well as the environment was highly contaminated. Based on the results, the Belarus Ministry of Health concluded that Spirulina accelerates the evacuation of radionuclides from the human body, without adverse side effects (Radioactive Caesium).


1993 report (author L.P. Loseva) confirmed the 1991 findings about the benefits of Spirulina for children with radiation sickness, leading to the awarding of a Russian patent for spirulina in the treatment of radiation sickness.

Spirulina platensis is an effective natural adsorbent of long-life radionuclides caesium-137, strontium-90, and potassium-40 and can lead to a reduction of radioactive contamination in children ages 10 to 16 years of age.”

Spirulina – Superfood of the future part 2

healthy planetSpirulina is ranked by AARP as the #1 superfood for extending your lifespan, and the UN has identified it as a primary easy accessible food in the fight against malnutrition worldwide. One of the outstanding benefits of spirulina is its protein content—it’s up to 70 percent protein by weight and contains all of the essential amino acids.

Spirulina is not a sea vegetables such as dulse, kelp, nori, kombu, arame, wakame.  Spirulina is actually more nutritious, it grows quickly in sweet water and can be cultivated and harvested in many parts on earth. Commercial production of spirulina is estimated to reach 220,000 tons by the year 2020 (source: Dr. Mercola). Traditionally it has been consumed by the Aztecs, we know because there are recipes available, and also in Africa around Lake Chad. Along with chlorella, spirulina is a member of the “blue-green” family—cyanobacteria . Unlike other bacteria, they have chlorophyll and use the sun as an energy source, in the way plants and algae do, therefore it is often called “blue-green algae”.


  • Spirulina has high natural iodine, which protects the thyroid and all glandular tissues in your body.
  • Spirulina is high in phytopigments (phycocyanin, chlorophyll, beta-carotene and other carotenoids), which reduce free radical damage from radiation, as well as from pollutants, drugs and other environmental toxins.
  • Spirulina is abundant in vitamins and minerals and antioxidants, which collectively promote healing and strengthen the immune system. (B vitamins (including B-12), beta-carotene and other carotenoids, and minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, manganese, potassium and zinc. It is also a great source of gamma-linoleic acid.
  • Spirulina is high in metallo-thionine compounds (proteins combined with metals) that bind heavy radioactive isotopes and eliminate them from your body (Matsubara et al. “Radioprotective effect of metallo-thionine,” presented at Radial Rays Conference, Tokyo Japan 1985)
  • Scientists at the Gastro-Intestinal Laboratory at McGill University in Montreal demonstrated that alginates derived from Laminaria could reduce up to 80 percent the amount of radioactive strontium absorbed through the intestine.
  • Spirulina is rich in highly bioavailable iron, which helps prevent anemia. A study published in the journal Cellular and Molecular Biology, Jan 2011 confirms this effect, finding spirulina effective in the treatment of anemia and age-related immune dysfunction among senior citizens.
  • Spirulina has a number of blood-strengthening properties. Immune cells in your blood are highly radiosensitive.
  • Spirulina helps to protect your kidneys, which are some of the FIRST organs to suffer damage after significant radiation exposure.


But what is it about spirulina that explains its ability to protect from the damaging effects of ionizing radiation?

One of the explanations is cyanobacteria’s unique blue pigment, phycocyanin. Spirulina is 16 percent phycocyanin by weight. Besides being a pigment, phycocyanin is also a nitrogen storage molecule. The nitrogen atoms bind with heavy metals, such as radioactive caesium-137, strontium-90, and potassium-40, hence “cleansing” these radioactive metals from the body.

Detoxification with Spirulina – Fluoride in Drinking water and Tooth Paste


toothpasteIt started in the 1940’s, when over eager scientists, doctors and politicians selected a chemical element which would affect the population over generations: FLUORIDE. Since then FLUORIDE has been considered the panacea for caries prophylaxis.

People who had knowledge in chemistry, might have asked, how could this happen, when it was a fact that fluoride has been known to be a dangerous poison. Actually above the toxicity of lead, and has been generally treated with security measurements in laboratories. And now we see that the same substance is added to our table salt, toothpaste as Sodium Fluoride, supplements, insecticides, rat poison, and last but not least tap water— good for human consumption!?


It must be emphasized that there has never been any medical proof that fluoride would help in caries prevention. Several field studies in the U.S., Canada and New Zealand have shown that in areas without fluoridation of drinking water there was even less tooth decay.

The human body needs about 2-3 g of the trace mineral; however, there are no reports of a deficiency, because the daily food supplies enough fluoride to maintain healthy levels. Under no circumstances, is there any evidence for the necessity of a ‘forced medication’ in drinking water, as it is executed in the USA, Canada or parts of Great Britain.

The EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) states clearly in their website:

What are fluoride’s health effects?
Excessive exposure to fluoride over time is well known to cause
a painful bone disease (skeletal fluorosis), and has also been linked to other chronic ailments including bone fragility, glucose intolerance, gastrointestinal distress, arthritis, dental fluorosis, thyroid disease, and possibly cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer. Infants are particularly suseptable to the effects of floride’s toxicity.

Fluoride-free toothpaste may be purchased in many of the same stores where toothpaste with fluoride is sold, though in a different section, however if in doubt, visit the health food store, and get suggestions.


Much harder to escape is the forced medication of fluoride, when it comes to table salt, as you know, you will find it in 99% of foods, and sometimes well hidden in huge quantities. There you might find nutrition facts about salt content, yet, it does not tell you the fluoride content, and there is virtually no way to control the dosage. New studies have shown in Europe that most people take fluoride far above toxicity levels. The consequences are devastating.


Fluorine is highly carcinogenic; it reinforces osteoporosis, and even more alarming is the effect on the human brain: Slowly but surely, Fluoride changes the chemical balance in the brain. This is not a “conspiracy theory”, but based on the fact that about 60 psychotropic drugs contain fluorine as an active or even main ingredient of the recipe. (Rohypnol, Diazepam (Valium), Flunitrazepam) are just a few.

In addition to the quieting effect, it still causes other side effects such as low blood pressure, memory problems, dizziness, blurred vision, confusion, oliguria and gastrointestinal disorders, and classical CFIDS symptoms.

Much more alarming is that fluoride is also an important component of neuroleptic drugs used for the treatment of psychoses, with sometimes-catastrophic side effects. An example is Stelazine (marketed in the U.S. by the company SmithKline Beecham. Its active ingredient is Trifluoperazine HCl, and it is mainly used in patients with psychosis and severe anxiety disorders). The side effects have been reported to trigger different forms of dyskinesia, Parkinson’s symptoms, or permanently altered states of consciousness, muscle stiffness, heart rhythm problems, etc.
